Presenter: K. Elise James, Program Specialist, Transition Postschool Outcomes and Section 504/Outreach, Georgia DOE
This session is designed to help families understand the different high school diploma options available to students with disabilities in Georgia, including the State-Defined Alternate Diploma for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. Families will learn what each diploma means, who they are designed for, and how the decision is made through the IEP team.
We will break down the information in simple, easy-to-understand terms and discuss how diploma choices can affect future opportunities—such as college options, job training, employment, and independent living supports. Families will also learn how instruction, assessments, and transition planning connect to each diploma pathway.
Most importantly, this session empowers families to participate confidently in IEP meetings and long-term planning for their child’s future. We will provide tips for asking helpful questions, understanding your child’s strengths and needs, and partnering with the school to ensure your child has access to the path that prepares them for a meaningful adult life.
